Barcelona Legend Sergio Busquets to Retire at End of Season

Barcelona icon and Inter Miami midfielder Sergio Busquets has announced he will retire from professional football at the end of the current Major League Soccer season. The 37-year-old, who recently helped Inter Miami secure a spot in the MLS play-offs, will bring to a close one of the most decorated careers in modern football.

Busquets, a product of Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy, spent 18 years at the Catalan club before joining Inter Miami in 2023. During his time in Spain, he amassed an extraordinary collection of trophies, including nine La Liga titles, seven Copa del Reys, three Champions League crowns, the 2010 FIFA World Cup, and the 2012 European Championship with Spain.

Confirming the decision in an emotional Instagram post, Busquets wrote:”I feel that the time has come to say goodbye to my career as a professional soccer player. It has been almost 20 years enjoying this incredible story that I have always dreamed of. A heartfelt thank you to everyone, and to football, for everything. You will always be a part of this beautiful story.

“Inter Miami praised their midfield leader, stating:”Since joining Inter Miami CF in 2023, Busquets has been instrumental in the club’s continued growth, contributing his vision, quality, experience, and leadership, helping secure the Supporters’ Shield and the Leagues Cup. The team now looks forward to his contribution in the final stretch of the campaign, which will bring to a close an extraordinary career.

Busquets’ farewell season is made even more poignant as he shares the pitch once more with his long-time Barcelona teammates Lionel Messi, Jordi Alba, and Luis Suárez. His final matches could come in December should Inter Miami advance deep into the MLS play-offs.

Speculation already surrounds his next step. Former coach Pep Guardiola, who helped shape Busquets’ rise at Barcelona, once said:”Busquets was the best, able to read everything that happens and anticipate situations. He didn’t move a lot, but he solved problems with his brain. I think he will be an exceptional coach.

“As his playing career nears its conclusion, many believe Busquets could soon transition into management, where his tactical intelligence may shine as brightly as it did on the field.
