Gyökeres Joins Elite List of Strikers With Gerd Müller Prize

Arsenal striker Viktor Gyökeres has been crowned winner of the Gerd Müller Trophy following an extraordinary 2024/25 campaign that saw him finish as the most prolific goalscorer in world football.

The 27-year-old Swede struck 63 goals in 63 matches for Sporting CP and his national team last season. His remarkable output powered Sporting to both the Primeira Liga and Taça de Portugal titles, while also securing the golden boot in the UEFA Nations League.

Gyökeres now stands alongside recent winners such as Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappé, who shared last year’s award, Erling Haaland in 2023, and Robert Lewandowski, who claimed the honour in 2021 and 2022. The award was presented in Paris at the Théâtre du Châtelet, placing his name firmly among the most celebrated strikers of the modern era.

Since moving to Arsenal in the summer, the forward has made a steady start, registering three goals in six matches across competitions. His debut came in the narrow victory over Manchester United, followed by a brace against Leeds United.

Despite criticism after a subdued display in the recent draw with Manchester City, analysts have pointed out that his struggles stem more from limited service than a lack of quality. Arsenal’s chance creation, rather than finishing, has been highlighted as the area requiring improvement if Gyökeres is to replicate last season’s devastating form in North London.

With the Gerd Müller Trophy now added to his achievements, Gyökeres heads into the rest of the campaign as one of Europe’s most closely watched strikers, carrying both expectation and momentum in Arsenal’s push for silverware.
