Messi’s Argentina Could Face Japan, South Korea, or Saudi Arabia in India Friendly

Argentina still have four friendly matches left before the end of 2025, including a much-anticipated stop in India this November. However, Lionel Messi and his teammates are still waiting to discover who they’ll face when they step onto the pitch in Kerala.

The September international break brought an end to Argentina’s competitive calendar for the year, as no more World Cup qualifiers remain in 2025. Their next major challenge — the Finalissima against Spain — is not expected until March 2026. In the meantime, Lionel Scaloni’s squad will use the remaining international breaks to test themselves in friendlies, fine-tune tactics, and give opportunities to younger players preparing for the next World Cup cycle.

In October, Argentina will make a return to the United States for the first time since their 2024 Copa América triumph. They will play Venezuela in Miami on October 10, followed by Puerto Rico in Chicago on October 13. These matches are expected to draw huge crowds of Albiceleste supporters, particularly in Miami, where Messi continues to attract global attention following his MLS adventure with Inter Miami.

The November window is shaping up to be even more intriguing. Plans currently have Argentina beginning their tour in Africa with a match against Angola, a side still chasing hopes of reaching the World Cup playoffs. From there, the world champions will fly to Kerala, India, for what promises to be a historic occasion — Argentina’s first game in the football-mad state.

What remains unclear is who will line up against Messi’s team in India. According to journalist Gastón Edul, the frontrunners are Japan, South Korea, or Saudi Arabia — three nations that would guarantee a high-profile clash and strong fan interest. At the same time, an African side could also be chosen, since by November the current stage of CAF World Cup qualifiers will have concluded, leaving nine nations already booked for the tournament.

For Indian fans, the anticipation is already building. Hosting Messi and Argentina is expected to be one of the biggest footballing events in the country’s history, regardless of the opponent.

Who do you think Argentina should face in Kerala — Japan, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, or maybe one of Africa’s rising powers?
