Trump Slams $100k Fee on H-1B Visa Applications

U.S. President Donald Trump has shaken the global labour market again — this time by jacking up the H-1B visa application fee to a staggering $100,000

The H-1B, popular among tech firms and speciality industries for hiring skilled foreign workers, already came with costs that employers usually shoulder. With this fresh price tag, bringing in international talent just got a whole lot harder.

Trump, while signing the proclamation, said:

“We need workers, we need great workers, and this pretty much ensures that that’s going to happen.”

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick was more blunt:

“Stop bringing in people to take our jobs, that’s our policy here.”

The new directive doesn’t stop at fees — it also tasks the Labour Department with revising wage levels for H-1B holders, a move that could further discourage companies from looking overseas for talent.

Why this matters for Naija:
Many Nigerians dream of the H-1B route into the U.S., especially in tech. With the new $100k fee, the door just got narrower. It could push Nigerian talent to explore Canada, the UK, or even remote work with U.S. companies instead of relocating.

Do you think this will slow the Nigerian brain drain to America, or just redirect it elsewhere?
