Yoruba Council Backs Dangote Refinery, Blasts Oil Unions

The Yoruba Council Worldwide (Igbimo Apapo Yoruba Lagbaye) and over 30 civil society groups have thrown their weight behind the Dangote Refinery, praising its steady reduction in fuel and diesel prices while warning oil unions against what they called “lies and misinformation.”

During a courtesy visit to the refinery on Friday, the delegation led by Aare Oladotun Hassan Esq described the multi-billion-dollar project as a “huge blessing” that has broken the grip of oil cabals long accused of exploiting Nigerians.

“All we see is hatred, misinformation, misconception and lies of monopoly cries,” Hassan said. “Dangote is a patriotic Nigerian per excellence who put his all to offer Nigerians relief by reducing PMS from ₦1,030 to ₦851 and diesel from ₦1,700 to ₦1,020 in just a year.”

The group called on President Bola Tinubu to discourage fuel importation through higher tariffs, increase crude supply to the refinery, and even consider nationalising oil wells to boost local refining.

They also urged Nigerians to rally behind Dangote, pointing out that he already dismantled cabals in the sugar and cement industries, and now aims to do the same in oil.

The Council further announced it will honour Dangote with the Omoluabi Royal Icon title and present him with the Nigeria Heroes Award as Legend of Democracy at the Presidential Villa on October 10.

Why this matters for Naija:
Fuel importation has drained Nigeria for decades, leaving citizens at the mercy of price manipulations. With Dangote’s refinery slashing prices and creating jobs, the battle now seems to be between new local capacity and old vested interests.

Do you think Dangote’s refinery will finally end Nigeria’s fuel wahala, or will the oil unions fight back harder?
