Nigeria’s Food Import Bill Hits N2.22tn in Six Months

Nigeria’s agricultural import bill surged to N2.22tn in the first half of 2025, raising concerns among farmers and millers who argue that the Federal Government’s trade policies are undermining local food production.

The sharp rise in imports has sparked fears of worsening food insecurity, as cheaper foreign goods continue to flood the market. Stakeholders say the development has left local producers struggling to stay afloat.

“The importation has dealt with our farmers,” said Kabir Ibrahim, National President of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria. “Our farmers are complaining that the prices are so low that they cannot buy fertiliser.”

Analysts warn that such a heavy dependence on imports not only discourages local production but also puts pressure on Nigeria’s scarce foreign exchange reserves.
