20 day Old Baby buried alive was rescued by a Shepherd in India
A 20-day-old baby girl has been rescued after she was buried alive in Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh, India.
A shepherd who was grazing his goats heard a faint cry coming from the ground. When he checked, he saw the baby’s tiny hand sticking out of the soil. He quickly raised alarm, and villagers called the police who dug the child out and rushed her to the hospital.
Doctors said the baby had mud in her mouth and nose, was struggling to breathe, and even had animal bites on her body. Dr Rajesh Kumar, principal of the medical college treating her, explained: “She is in critical condition, showing signs of oxygen deficiency. After some minor improvement, she developed an infection. But we are trying our best to save her.”
Police are still searching for her parents, while the state’s child helpline has stepped in to support.
Sadly, this is not the first time in India. In 2019, another baby girl was found buried alive inside a clay pot but survived after weeks of treatment. Experts say these cases are tied to the country’s culture that favors boys over girls, with many female children abandoned or killed.

In Nigeria too, abandoned baby cases pop up, often linked to poverty and unwanted pregnancies. But burying a child alive shows how dangerous cultural beliefs can be when people see children as a burden instead of a blessing.
