Lagos Police Arrest Thief Who Shot Businessman in Daylight, Stole Necklace

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested John Samuel, a 28-year-old ex-convict from Akwa Ibom, for a violent daylight robbery in Ikeja.

According to DSP Babaseyi Oluseyi, the command’s deputy spokesperson, Samuel—recently released from prison after serving a six-year term for armed robbery—was tracked to his hideout in Epe and apprehended on Friday, September 19.

On August 18, Samuel allegedly shot businessman Gbenga Obama on Gbajobi Street, Allen Avenue, before robbing him of an expensive gold necklace and valuables. CCTV footage showed the suspect firing an English pistol at the victim while his accomplice waited on a motorcycle. The victim survived after treatment.

Samuel confessed to selling the stolen jewelry for ₦4 million, far below its market value.

Oluseyi described him as “vicious and notorious for armed robbery, assassination, and murder,” adding that efforts are underway to apprehend his accomplices.

Lagos Commissioner of Police, CP Olohudare Jimoh, commended the officers for the successful arrest and assured the public of ongoing discreet investigations.
