NECO Probes Mass Cheating in 38 Schools as 2025 SSCE Results Are Released
The National Examinations Council (NECO) has begun investigations into 38 schools across 13 states over mass cheating during the 2025 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE).
Registrar, Prof. Ibrahim Wushishi, said in Minna on Wednesday that the affected schools would face sanctions after appearing before the Council. He also revealed that 3,878 malpractice cases were recorded this year, a sharp drop from 10,094 in 2024.
Nine supervisors from Rivers, Niger, FCT, Kano, and Osun States were recommended for blacklisting over poor supervision, aiding malpractice, lateness, and misconduct.

Despite the malpractice concerns, performance remained strong. Out of 1.36 million candidates who sat for the exams, 818,492 (60.26%) obtained five credits and above, including English and Mathematics. A total of 1,144,496 (84.26%) passed five credits and above, irrespective of the two core subjects.
Kano State topped the chart with 68,159 candidates, followed by Lagos (67,007) and Oyo (48,742). At the other end, Gabon centre recorded no candidate with five credits including English and Mathematics.
Looking ahead, NECO announced that the SSCE will now be conducted on 38 subjects only, in line with the revised national curriculum, to shorten the process and speed up result release.
