Report Loan Apps Harassing You — “No Consumer Should Live in Fear” – FCCPC Tells Nigerians

Abuja — The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has urged Nigerians to report loan apps and businesses that use harassment, intimidation or public shaming to recover unpaid debts.

The commission said that while debts must be paid, no consumer should be subjected to abuse or trauma in the process. “Are you being harassed by loan apps or unfair businesses? No consumer should live in fear! The FCCPC is here for you, ensuring your rights are protected and businesses play fair,” reads a message posted on X by the agency.

Several Nigerians have complained about receiving threatening messages, repeated calls, and even having embarrassing or sensitive pictures shared with their contacts by these loan app operators. In April 2024, reports confirmed that some people lost their jobs after suffering public humiliation due to these practices.

To help victims, FCCPC laid out steps for lodging complaints:

  • Send an email to contact@fccpc.gov.ng
  • Use social media, by sending a direct message to FCCPC on X
  • File a complaint through the FCCPC website: go to fccpc.gov.ng, click on Menu, then File a Complaint. Provide personal details (name, contact), the name of the loan app, evidence (like screenshots), and what outcome you want.

FCCPC also noted that this push is part of efforts underway to block or sanction rogue digital lenders who flout consumer rights.
