UI Flags Off Jaw War 2025 with Focus on Food Security

The University of Ibadan has officially launched the 2025 edition of Jaw War, the competition proudly called Africa’s biggest public speaking battle. This year, the spotlight is on a hot-button issue that affects every Nigerian home: food security and nutrition.

The six-week contest, themed “Africa in the First Century and Beyond: Power, Progress and Possibility”, will see halls of residence and faculties lock horns in knockout rounds, all building up to a grand finale in October.

What makes this year special? The opening round was held in partnership with the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN), putting Nigeria’s food crisis front and center. With three out of five children in the country malnourished and nine out of ten people eating contaminated food, the conversations coming out of this debate are far from just “school talk.”

UI’s Literary and Debating Society President, Peace Babatimileyin, called Jaw War “a classroom of ideas” where young people sharpen their voices to influence Africa’s future. GAIN’s national coordinator, Tomisin Odunbaku, also stressed that with President Tinubu recently declaring a state of emergency on food security, youth-led solutions are more critical than ever.

For many in the UI community, Jaw War is not just a competition but a tradition. It’s about pride, identity, and showcasing the intellectual power of Nigerian students to the world.

Why this matters to Nigeria:

Food insecurity is no longer a faraway policy talk; it’s on our dinner tables.

Jaw War gives young Nigerians a stage to propose bold solutions.

The ideas here can influence national policy at a time Nigeria is desperate for fresh strategies.

So, the big question is: Can Nigerian youths turn debates into real solutions for our food crisis?
